Wow!! The view is incredible!! And the designs of the planes remind me of the transport ships (*doesn't remember what they were called exactly~*) from Star Wars. Anywho, congratulations on the well-deserved DD~
The view was based on a very similar piece I had fav'ed on CGHUB before it exploded. Got really inspired thanks to it, it's a shame I don't keep the ref anymore. The ship design was based on the guy that designed many of the SW classic ship designs, and also BSG and some Star Trek too. So you hit the spot there. Thanks for the kind words!
this is a great design, but i don't think it would actually work. To start out with, the placement of the wings makes the craft unbalanced, meaning it is rear heavy and would till upward quickly, would make a great rocket though. Another flaw i see is that there is no stabilizer fin, so if the craft doesn't have an auto-correctional board to constantly monitor and keep the ship upright, it'll just violently flip around. I would say that to make this think practical, you would need a downdraft ducted thingy to push the ship up, the added benefit is that it could levitate, i don't see it working though for if you go sideways. With the added auto-correctional circuit to control the flaps on the wings will constantly be making corrections to keep it upright reducing the need for a stabilizer fin. You could also have a low profile stabilizer fin, they tend to be long and short.
I'm not an aerodynamics/engineer expert, my knowledge about avionics is basic. It's hard to come up with new original designs looking functional. Next time I'll design a ship I'll look into the science of it a bit more thoroughly and take into account the stuff you mentioned! In the end it doesn't really have to work, it just has to be convincing enough, although it's always harder to convince people who do have knowledge of the technical stuff.
oh my goodness, i can't tell you how much i love seeing these designs, it like a physics exercise, find out how to make a design work, in this case, wings need centering, and either an auto-correctional control board and/or low profile stabilizer fin. Overall, it is a fantastic design, so don't get me wrong, i enjoy designing air craft also, though it is hard to intentionally make a design that won't work and finding out why, that is why sometimes i go up to bing images and finding them.
nice ship. it reminds me a little bit of one i made for a game (battleships forever aka BSF) a while back. BSF has to be the best RTS game ever made, plus you can make custom ships, custom sprites and custom weapons for the game
